When it comes to selecting the best travel trailer brands for 2019 you will find a slew of opinions. I have compiled a list of travel trailer companies that manufacture high-quality travel trailers and provide good customer service. Keep in mind that the service comes from the dealer. A good and reputable travel trailer company will make sure their dealers are providing good service to buyers.

I selected these travel trailers based on my own research. I was looking for reputable manufactures that produced a quality travel trailer with a good selection of standard features and options.

Airstream

When you think luxury travel trailer Airstream is usually one of the first that comes to mind. They produce some of the most recognizable travel trailers in the industry. They are priced at the high-end of the travel trailer price range, however, the amount of value you get is very well worth the price. Their iconic models include the Classic, Globetrotter, Tony Bahama, Flying Cloud and several others.

Airstream Flying Cloud

The Airstream model I have a preference for is the Flying Cloud. In my humble opnion this is one of their best travel trailers. With a starting price of $67,400 it is not for everyone. Here are some basic specs on the Flying Cloud:

  • Sleep Capacity: 4-8
  • Length: 19 feet to 30 feet
  • GVWR: 4,500 to 8,800
  • 19 available floor plans

The Flying Cloud is loaded with features that exude quality. Here are just a few of the features I liked in this travel trailer (some may be optional):

  • Ultraleather seating
  • High-end kitchen appliances

Grand Design Recreational Vehicles

This travel trailer manufacturer has one very loyal and raving fan base. I have come across many owner reviews of Grand Design travel trailers who rave about the quality of these units and the outstanding customer service. Grand Design is located in Middlebury, IN and all of their travel trailers and fifth-wheels come with a 3-Year limited structural warranty. Their Imagine XLS travel trailer is one of my favorite due to its excellent styling, features, and amenities.

Grand Design best travel trailer
Grand Design Imagine

Grand Design as a company in the RV industry is not very old. They have only been around since 2001 as an independent company. They spun off from a larger RV company. Grand Design formed an alliance with Winnebago and operates as an independent business within Winnebago Industries. So they have financial stability but can continue to grow and design the way they know best.

Grand Design Imagine

The Imagine is my preferred trailer of choice from this RV manufacturer. There are several reasons I like the Imagine. First off it comes in 11 different floor plans and they all come with a queen-sized bed. There is simply no way I would want a travel trailer with anything smaller than a queen bed. Here are some basic specs on the Grand Design Imagine:

  • Choose from 11 floor plans
  • Length: 26 ft 9-inches to 36-feet 11-inches
  • UVW: 6,695 lbs to 7,495 lbs
  • Gel-coated fiberglass exterior
  • One-piece roof membrane with a 12-year warranty

The Imagine is also loaded with a ton of standard features. Here are just a few of the ones that standout for me and for what I’m looking for:

  • Solid hardwood drawer fronts
  • Large panoramic windows
  • Upgraded residential furniture
  • Residential quality countertops
  • Stainless steel microwave
  • 3-burner range with oven
  • Double door fridge

In addition to the many standard features you have a choice of 3 equipment packages. Choosing one of the 3 is mandatory. The 3 packages are the “Peace of Mind”, “Ultimate Power”, and Four-Season Protection. For detail on each package click here.

Grand Design RV has a collection of excellent travel trailers and 5th wheels. See them all right here.

Oliver Travel Trailers

Oliver Travel Trailers makes high-quality luxury fiberglass trailers in their Hohenwald, TN manufacturing facility. The company which was started by twin brothers Jim and John Oliver was formed in 2008. The Oliver travel trailers are built using 4 fiberglass shells, two inner shells and two outer shells. It’s a unique process that ensures a very well-built travel trailer.

There are many things that set Oliver travel trailers apart from the industry. It starts with the travel trailer wheels found on all Oliver models. The wheels are not cheap travel-trailer wheels but rather E-rated, 10 ply, light truck tires. You won’t find any wood or carpet on an Oliver travel trailer, thus no more or milder either.  The frame is aircraft grade aluminum which provides durability and longevity.

The Oliver travel trailer is well-suited for those who are interested in extreme temperature camping. The insulated double shell keeps the cold out and all water lines, appliances, tanks are enclosed within the lower shell.

Due to its aerodynamic styling and light aluminum frame, it is easy to tow.

All Oliver units go through a 4-stage inspection process. There is an Incoming Inspection Process, Production Inspection, Final Inspection and, the Shakedown. The Shakedown is a free night of comping a few miles down from the manufacturing plant. This gives the buyer a real-world test of their Oliver travel trailer.

Oliver's Legacy Best Travel Trailer of 2019

Oliver Legacy Elite 2

The Oliver Legacy Elite 2  pictured above is my favorite model. I like the Elite 2 for several reasons. I like that it has a dry weight of just 4,600 pounds. So it can be towed with a good truck or full-size SUV. (Keep in mind 4,600 pounds is just the dry weight. For towing you need to consider the everything else you put in it for your trip.

The Legacy Elite 2 comes in two floor plans. One with twin beds and the the with a dinette to 75″ x 79″ bed conversion. This model is loaded with standard features. These are just a few of the ones that stood out for me:

  • Full Custom Molded Interior and Exterior Insulated Shells
  • Plumbing, Holding Tanks and Drain Pipes enclosed between shells with heat to diminish freezing
  • Quad Shocks on dual Dexter leaf spring axles with “Nev-R-Adjust” 10″ electric brakes for exceptional control and braking
  • Nordicold 3 Way Refrigerator 4.5 cu. ft. (12V, 11OV, LP)
  • Molded vanity
  • 15′ Dometic awning
  • 22″ Flat screen LCD TV
  • Custom mounted speakers (4)

With a history spanning over 50 years, Winnebago is a well known and respected travel trailer manufacturer and definitely one of the best travel trailer brands in the industry. Headquartered in Forest River, Iowa the company builds high-quality motor-homes, travel trailers, fifth wheels, and toy haulers.

Happier Camper

Called the Adaptiv interior it lets you arrange the interior of the travel trailer just about any way you desire. The honeycomb fiberglass floor allows you set the cubes in any arrangements. The Adaptiv cubes include storage cubes, kitchen sink, and cabinets, table, cooler and several more.

Happier Camper one of our favorite travel trailers

One thing to keep in mind with the Happier Camper is that it does not have a typical bathroom It has a dry toilet. So for some of you that might not be what you are looking for. That is the only drawback I see to this camper trailer. It is small so don’t expect a ton of room, but that is the way it’s been designed. It’s modern and it does make use of the small interior extremely well.

The Happier Camper is a truly adaptable travel trailer well made and excellently extremely by the manufacturer.

Starcraft Travel Trailers

Another of our picks for best travel trailer brands with a long history, Starcraft started out making metal farm equipment back in 1903. In 1968 they began to manufacture travel trailers. They were purchased by Jayco who was subsequently purchased by Thor Industries. Starcraft has a nice line-up of travel trailers, fifth wheels, and toy haulers.

They all come with a 3-year warranty, as well as including a Magnum Roof System. Their trademarked Tuffshell is a vacuum-bonded lamination used for their walls.

Mossy Oak travel trailer

Of all the models in their line-up, I like Starcraft Mossy Oak which is pictured above. See the entire Starcraft RV lineup.

Lance Travel Trailers

Lance travel trailers have a reputation for being very well-built and an owner base that love the customer support offered by the company. Lan makes models in 3 categories; travel trailers, truck campers, and toy haulers. What we like a lot about Lance is the interior of their models. The designs are extremely practical and very well done using top-grade materials.

Lance using Azdel composite panels which is an eco-friendly toxin-free composite panel superior to wood. You can read about Azdel panel right here.

Recent Consumer Digest awarded the entire line of Lance models their highest rating. Jayco Travel Trailer

With over 50 years of industry experience, Jayco has been one of the better brands of travel trailers. They have a very loyal following and have always been very responsive to their customers. In 2016 Jayco was purchased by Thor Industries which also owns Airstream among many other travel trailer companies. The hope is that the quality, service and customer responsiveness remain intact after the purchase by this huge industrial conglomerate.

Jayco travel trailer

Heartland RV

Heartland RV is another recreational manufacturer owned by Thor Industries. Heartland was formed in 2003 so it’s still a baby as far as RV industry history goes. However, that is not indicative of their products. Heartland makes some of the best travel trailers and 5th wheels in the market. As a matter of fact, their first RV was a high-end fifth-wheel the Landmark.

Best Travel Trailer Under 4,400 Pounds

Travel trailers that weigh under 4,500 pounds can be towed by some sports utility vehicles and small trucks. You won’t need a huge truck to take these travel trailers out on the road. We have researched most of the popular travel trailer manufactures to see which of their models can meet the GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating)  of under 4,500 lbs. Here is what we found during our research.

Travel Trailers That Weigh Under 4500 Pounds

Our favorite travel trailers that have a GVWR of 4500 pounds or less. For a typical automobile this weight might be too much, however, a full-sized SUV or truck such as a Ford F-150 can easily tow this size travel trailer.

Micro Lite by Flagstaff (23FBKS)  – 4,419 pounds GVWR

The Micro Lite by Flagstaff doesn’t need a truck to be towed A full-sized SUV or pick-up can easily tow the Micro Lite.

The Micro Lite comes in 14-floor different plans with the 23FBKS under 4,500 lbs GVWR. This is an excellent lightweight travel trailer with lots of space for couples or a small family.

The Mini Lite by Rockwood a division of  Forest River is a very nice travel trailer that offers lots of value in a small package.  14 different floor plans are available. Lance 1985 – 4,245 pounds GVWR

We are big fans of Lance travel trailer for many reasons. One is that our research had shown they make very good quality trailers. Their use of Azdel composite panels shows how dedicated they are to making travel trailers that will last. The Lance 1985 is a good example of lightweight coupled with superior design. The interior is minimal but elegant. Functionally, all Lance travel trailers are made to make the best use of space.

Livin’ Lite Camplite (CL23RKS) – 4,108 pounds GVWR

Livin’ Lite was recently awarded the 2017 RVDA Quality Circle Award for their entire line-up of travel trailers including the Camplite travel trailer. Available in various floor plans the Camplite is a versatile well-designed and reliable travel trailer.

Airstream Flying Cloud – 4,500 pounds GVWR

Iconic is the one word that comes to mind when looking at Airstream travel trailers. The Flying Cloud is one of Airstream more popular models and has more floor plans that any other travel trailer in their line-up. The interior has the Euro-style design that is both stylish and practical. They are not cheap with a starting price of about $66,000 but then again you are getting an Airstream.

Coachmen Viking (17SBH) – 3,716 pounds GVWR

When it comes to lightweight, and having a travel trailer with a GVWR of fewer than 4,500 lbs it’s hard to beat a Coachmen Viking. These travel trailers are affordable but do not compromise or quality and comfort. Towing a Coachmen Viking is a breeze with a typical full-size SUV or light truck.

Coachmen Clipper (14CR)- 3,803 pounds GVWR

Like the Viking above the Coachmen Clipper is another lightweight travel trailer. Designed with fuel efficient tow vehicles in mind the Clipper has floor plans that start at 2,500 GVWR. The plan selected here is the 14CR which has a GVWR of 3,803 lbs.

Venture RV Sonic – 4,000 pounds GVWR

Venture RV is not a name I am personally familiar with, however, my research indicates that make a very well design travel trailer. Venture’s parent company is K.Z inc which happens to be a subsidiary of Thor Industries. K-Z got started with truck campers back in 1972 so there is lots of experience in this company.

The Venture Sonic comes in 7-floor plans so you are bound to find one that meets your needs.

Travel Trailers Under 3500 Pounds

If 4,500 pounds is too heavy for your vehicle to tow than you might want to consider a travel trailer under 3500 pounds. These are ones we found during our research that have a GVWR of 3500 pounds or less

Winnebago Minnie Drop (1710) – 3,500 pounds GVWR

A unique design, excellent use of interior space make the Winnebago Minnie Drop one of our favorite lightweight travel trailers. You can read our review of the Minnie Drop right here.

Airstream Basecamp – 3,500 pounds GVWR

Another Airstream entry this time weighing at 3,500 lbs GVWR is the Basecamp. The Basecamp is small but it is very well-design like all the other Airstream travel trailers. A panoramic front window makes the Basecamp a cool looking travel trailer that is also extremely functional for its small size of 16-feet in length. In 2017 the Airstream Basecamp was voted RV of the year by RV Business Magazine.

Happier Camper – 3,500 pounds GVWR

If you have never looked at a Happier Camper we suggest you do. When it comes to a unique design that is both lightweight and functional we don’t think you will find one better in this weight range. The Adaptiv modular cubes allow you to design the interior of the Happier Camper just about any way you want.

The retro styling and colors make the Happier Camper stand out from the crowd. Check out the Happier Camper here.

Lance 1475 – 3,500 pounds GVWR

Can you tell we like Lance? Here we are again with another Lanlightweightght travel trailer. This time it’s the Lance 1475. This is the smallest travel trailer in the Lance line-up. Even at this small size, it has a separate shower and toilet which is something we always look for in a small travel trailer. We are not big fans of the wet bath (shower and toilet in one).

Jayco Jay Flight SLX 7 (154BH) – 3,250 pounds GVWR

The Jayflight SLX 7 offers plenty of room in a small easy to tow travel trailer. This model is the bunkhouse models that sleeps 3-4 people comfortably. Not one of my favorite models but it is lightweight and affordable. The floor plan is well laid out and does have a separate toilet and shower.

Livin’ Lite Camplite (CL11FK) – 3,500 pounds GVWR

Livin’ Lite makes another lightweight travel trailer that made our list. This one has a GVWR of 3,500 lbs. You can view details and specs on this Camplite trailer on their website. This floor plan is nice and offers many of the creature comforts found in the other models.

K-Z RV Escape Mini – 3,500 pounds GVWR

Both models offer great value, reliability, and durability. 10-floor plans are available that are rated at 3,500 lbs GVWR or below.

Lightweight Travel Trailers Under 2500 Pounds

At this GVWR we are getting into travel trailers that are really ultra-light. Some of these can be towed with just a car. Make sure to check your vehicle tow rating or speak to a quality mechanic or RV dealer. There are 6-floor plans two of which are toy hauler travel trailers. They even have a queen size bed and separate shower an toilet. The Cherokee Wolf Pup offers a tremendous amount of value.

Forest River Cherokee Wolf Pup (17CJ) – 1,743 pounds GVWR

Tip For Buying a Lightweight Travel Trailer

When you are ready to buy or even just thinking of buying a lightweight travel trailer there are a few things you can do to help you make a better purchase decision. Here are some tips you can use.

  • Know just how much your car or truck can tow. This is the can be found in your owners manual. Two key rating you want to know.
    • Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) which is the maximum weight of the vehicle and travel trailer combined.
    • Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) is the maximum weight the rear axle can support.
  • Talk to other owners of the model or models you might be interested in. Ask questions, ask to see the inside if possible.
  • At the dealership goe inside the model, open cabinets, feel the materials, look for flaws etc. Be very critical as this is not a cheap purchase.
  • Ask the dealership if you can talk to past customers, ask questions about service, warranty etc.

Best Travel Trailers for Couples

Our son will soon be off to college so my wife and I intend to travel the country by ourselves. In researching the best travel trailer for couples like us, we came upon 5 models. Each with their own strengths and weaknesses and in various price ranges.

Lance 1575 Travel Trailer – Our Top Pick Best Travel trailers for Couples

The one we crowned the best travel trailer for couples is the Lance 1575. This lightweight travel trailer has all the things a couple will need. What we especially like about the Lance 1575 is the separate shower and toilet, a comfortable dinette, and they still manage to fit a queen-sized bed and a well-designed galley. For couples, the Lance 1575 is hard to beat.

Lance travel trailer for couples

The Lance 1575 has an overall length of 20 1/2 feet, and a width of 84 and 3/4 inches. It easily sleeps 4 people (my wife and I and our 2 granddaughters). Interior height is roomy at 78-inches. The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating is 3,500 pounds making it very light and allowing it to be towed with a full-size SUV. For example, the Ford Explorer can tow up to 5ooo lbs depending on towing package. The Jeep Grand Cherokee can tow up to 7200 lbs also depending on towing package.

Construction is aluminum framed sidewalls, floor, and ceiling. The interior walls are Azdell which you can read about here. The floor and ceiling are insulated laminate. You get aluminum wheels, an exterior wash station, manual tongue and stabilizer jacks, and Thermopane tinted windows.

Inside you will find a 5-cubic feet refrigerator which is a good size for us. The range is a 3-burner stainless with cover, a stainless steel hood with light, fan, and backsplash. The bathroom is equipped with a tub and shower combination, and the toilet is a marine toilet with a foot pedal. In the bedroom, you will find queen size mattress with pillow-top and LED reading lights.

Lance offers several options on equipment that we will be considering. The A/C unit is definitely one of them since we will be using the travel trailer in hot climates. There are 3 Coleman models to choose from. In addition, you can purchase a backup camera, solar panel, and 28-inch 12-volt tv.

A power 12-foot awning is also offered that has LED lighting, and a keyless entry system with a key Fob bit if which we are considering.

The final option we will consider is the built-in microwave for those days when we would rather not cook a full meal.

Pricing for the Lance 1575 start at around $37,500 MSRP. Not inexpensive by any means but we believe this is going to be the perfect travel trailer for us.

Though the Lance 1575 is our preferred model it is not the only one that is good for couples. We found 4 other travel trailers that provide couples with all the amenities they will need, assuming your criteria is the same as ours. Before we dive into the other 4 models let us tell you what we wanted.

Our Criteria For Best Travel Trailer for Couples

We know most of our travels is going to be just the two of us, so we don’t need lots of space. We looked for a travel trailer less than 25-feet in length preferably closer to 20. We also don’t want to buy a truck just to tow the trailer so we wanted something lightweight with a GVWR of 4,000 or less. This weight limit allows out full-size SUV to tow the trailer comfortably.

We both wanted the travel trailer to have a bathroom with a separate toilet and shower or what is known in the industry as a dry bath,. We both dislike the ones where the shower head hangs over a special type toilet. Yuk!!

We both wanted at a minimum a queen-sized bed. At home, we have a king-sized bed so we are used to having lots of space between us. A full-sized bed would be too uncomfortable. We wanted a small dinette and a nice galley with hopefully a close to the full-size refrigerator.

Our last need was that it could sleep more than just the two of us. We have two granddaughters that will soon be able to go on trips with us and we wanted to make sure they have a place to sleep indoors.

One final item we wanted, not a deal breaker, but a really nice to have was Azdel composite panels. You can read this article and learn why we think having Azdel panels in your travel trailer is a really good thing.

The Lance 1575 fit our search criteria perfectly. It is by no means the least expensive of the 5 travel trailers we researched but it offers a tremendous amount of value, has an excellent floor plan, beautiful design and hopefully reliability as well.

Here is a photo of the Lance 1575 interior and you will see why we fell in love.

Best Travel Trailers for Retired Couples

Runner-Ups

Let’s take a look at the 4 other travel trailers we think are great for couples or retirees who don’t require lots of space.

Winnebago Minnie Drop

We previously took a look at the Winnebago Minnie Drop right here. The Minnie Drop has a lot going for it, including a price of about $20,000, a roomy interior, it is lightweight and comes in a variety of color and graphics choices. Some models have a queen-sized bed, pull-out outdoor kitchen and even bunk beds.

What we personally did not like about the Minnie Drop is that the model we were interested in has a shower/toilet combination or wet bath. That to me was not a big deal but to my wife, it was a deal killer.

Other than our own personal dislike for the wet-bath, the Minnie Drop is an excellent travel trailer for couples and retirees who want a compact, room, lightweight and reliable travel trailer.

Airstream Nest

The Airstream Nest is another one of the travel trailers we have covered on our site. You can read all about the history and features of the Airstream Nest by clicking here. When it comes to a beautifully designed fiberglass body travel trailer the Nest is hard to beat.

The exterior and interior are just plain beautiful. The panoramic window along the rear is stunning and adds an impactful visual element to both the interior and exterior. The color and fabric are well-thought out and have a very stylish and distinctive look.

It is designed with a rear door which creates an interior that feels roomy. But just like the Minnie Drop it has a wet bath, a deal killer for my wife. For me, it was not just the wet bath but the hefty price tag. The Nest comes in at $45,900 to start. This is well outside our budget. Don’t get me wrong the Nest is well worth the price. But for our limited budget, it was not.

Forest River Cherokee Wolf Pup

Cute, lightweight, and with several very nice floor plans the Cherokee Wolf Pup was another model we research that you might want to consider. It comes in 6-floor plans, two of which are toy haulers.  The floor plan we preferred is the 16FQ.

This floor plan comes with a queen-sized bed, separate shower and toilet, and dinette.  Overall we really like the Cherokee Wolf Pup and for couples, this is an excellent travel trailer. My wife and I were split on this one as she liked it quite a bit but for me, the deciding factor was not having Azdel composite panels. Call me picky, but if I can avoid unnecessary maintenance later, I’m all in.

Oliver Travel Trailer Legacy Elite

Oliver Travel Trailers makes the Oliver Legacy Elite, a single axle 18-feet 5-inch all fiberglass body travel trailer. The Oliver travel trailer was initially my first choice for a couples travel trailer but failed in one area that the Lance 1575 did not. The Legacy Elite has a fold-down bed. In other words, the wrap around dinette converts to a bed. That I did not like as much as having a separate queen-sized bed and dinette.

Though heavier than some of the other models on this page, the Legacy has a GVWR of 5,000 lbs, it is still manageable with a full-sized SUV.

It includes many, and I mean many standard features making it a very capable and comfortable lightweight travel trailer.

Overall Oliver makes an excellent travel trailer and both models in their line-up get excellent reviews. Thoguh it’s a travel trailer not suited for my wife and I it could very well be suited for you. So do take the time to look at them a little deeper.

Whether you like the Lance, like we do, or not choosing a travel trailer for you and your significant other is still a very personal choice. We recommend you do your research, visit dealerships, or RV shows to actually see and feel various type of travel trailers. Whether you are a young couple, a retired couple, or simply need a small, lightweight travel trailer we are sure there is one out there for you.

You do not have to sleep in your travel trailer all cramped up due to a small bed. There are many models of travel trailers that have king-sized beds as a standard feature or as an option.

So there you have it the Top 12 Best Travel Trailers, in my opinion of course. The most important advice I can give you when selecting a travel trailer is to do your own independent research. 1. It seems for the money and especially the reliability and durability the Oliver 23.5 ft is hands down the better choice, although the Airstream Serentity at 30 ft is a close competitor. Between the two the Airstream is longer but a lot more expensive.
Probably comes down to money and preference

    • Hi Rick,
My husband and I tend to agree. Oliver makes a really nice travel trailer. Though it is more expensive the quality and reliability according to owners is pretty good. Like just about anything else you get what you pay for. Thanks for your comments, very much appreciated.

  2. Hello
Very well done piece of information. I just want to ask you why did you leave the Venture travel trailers out…I have been researching for approximately one year and to me, the Lance and Venture travel trailers are some of the best in the market.

    Thanks

    • Hi Hugo, I’ve researched quite a few travel trailers and had not come across Venture before. Thanks for bringing them to my attention. I will take a look at them in detail. Cheers and Happy New Years.
