This post was updated on March 24th, 2022

In this post, we are going to introduce you to the Jayco 2021 Jay Feather Micro Series of lightweight travel trailers.

A few weeks ago I was planning an article titled the Forest River R-Pod versus the Jayco Hummingbird. When I went to Jayco’s website to get specifications on the 2021 Hummingbird I could find any.

So, I emailed Jayco. I received a reply email from John McDonalds, Jayco’s Corporate Brand Ambassador stating:

We are now manufacturing 2021 models, and the Hummingbird did not carry over into the new model year.  However, we are going to be rolling out a new ultra-lightweight travel trailer that will be very similar called Jay Feather Micro.

He also sent over a floor plan of the prototype and a brochure of the new Jayco Jay Feather Micro.

First of all, I want to thank John for replying to my email it’s not always you get a response from Corporate, and for sending over the marketing collateral. So with the Hummingbird out of the picture, I decided to write an article spotlighting the Micro series. Let’s get started.

Introducing the Jay Feather Micro

Jayco Jay Feather Micro

When I compare the body style of the Jay Feather Micro to the Hummingbird I personally much prefer the Micro. Both have the curved front end for better aerodynamics, however, the Micro does not have the curved rear like the Hummingbird.

One of the most important improvements on the Jay Feather Micro is the addition of Azdel composite wall construction. To learn more about Azdel and why it matters in the construction of your camper read this article I wrote on the benefits of Azdel. I’ve always considered Azdel to be superior to just about any other type of wall construction.

Floorplans

The Jayco Jay Feather Micro is available in 5 floorplans. Here is the layout for each one.

166FBS

Jay Feather Micro 166FBS

The 166FBS has the bedroom area towards the front of the travel trailer. The bed is a full-size bed with under bed storage, and a nightstand located at the head of the bed.

It includes a slide-out for added room. In the slide-out section, you’ll find a jack-kife sofa and folding table storage behind it. There is overhead storage space as well. One new feature available in this floor plan is Jayco’s patent-pending table trays.

The 32-inch LED TV is equipped with a built-in soundbar which is pretty cool.

The kitchen area is directly opposite the slide-out and includes a sink, stove, microwave, and a TV stand to the left. Towards the rear of the 166FBS you’ll find a dry bath (separate toilet and showed) the fridge and pantry. There is outside storage and you get an 11-foot awning.

171BH

Jayco Jay Feather Micro 171BH

The Jay Feather Micro 171BH has the bedroom in the front and the mattress size is a queen size. There is no under bed storage on this one but there are overhead storage and an overhead entertainment center. There is a nightstand located at the head of the bed.

There is no slide-out available on the 171BH instead you’ll find a sofa and dinette table with the kitchen area directly opposite. The sink, stove, microwave, and refrigerator are all within easy reach.

Towards the rear of the camper, you’ll find a nice-size bathroom with a tub/shower combination, toilet, sink, and medicine cabinet. Nest to those you’ll find bunk beds.

Outside you’ll find a 13-foot awning.

I find this floorplan very suitable for young families that need a sleeping area for the kids and the tub/shower combination makes it easy to give the young ones a bath.

173MRB

Jayco Jay Feather Micro 173MRB

The Jay Feather Micro 173MRB floorplan maximizes interior space by the use of a Murphy bed towards the front of the camper. The Murphy bed is a 60 x 75, according to Jayco sleeps 3-4. There is a 90-inch wide couples coach at the foot of the Murphy bed.

The kitchen area has a typical 3-burner stove, sink, flip-up countertop, microwave, and fridge. Opposite the kitchen is the dinette and overhead storage and a small TV along one side.

In the rear of the 173MRB are the dry bath with its tub/shower combo, sink, linen closet, and medicine cabinet.

Outside your find a 14-inch awning and

199MBS-jay-feather-micro

The Jay Feather Micro is the more fully-featured floor plan in the series. Like the 173MRB above it also includes a Murphy bed. The 90-inch wide sofa at the foot of the bed now adds Jayco’s patent-pending table trays.

The slide-out includes a u-shaped dinette with the typical kitchen area on the opposite side. The bathroom is a dry bath with a tub/shower combination. In the rear of the camper, you will also find double over bunk beds.

Sleeping capacity is 7-8 people.

The 199MBS includes an outdoor kitchen with a fridge and a griddle. This plan has a 14-foot awning.

12SRK

Jayco Jay Feather Micro 12SRK

The Jayco Jay Feather Micro 12SRK is Jayco’s entry into ultralight campers. According to Jayco the 12SRK was designed to enable vehicles such as the Jeep Wrangler the ability to tow it. This is a growing demand for ultralight campers that can be towed with Jeeps and other similar-sized SUVs.

It has some features unique to the 12SRK. Here are just some of them:

  • Roof-mount solar prep & inverter pre-wire
  • 25 gal. freshwater tank
  • Embossed metal outside camp kitchen with 120V/12V Dometic cooler
  • 17 in. pull-out Blackstone® griddle
  • Retractable futon sofa (sofa by day- bed by night)
  • Optional 2-bike carrier rack
  • Optional Solar Power package offering 30 amp control panel & 100W roof-mounted solar panel

Overall I think the 12SRK is an excellent entry into this category. It competes with the likes of the Happier Camper though they are really two different in terms of how they implement their floor plans.

Jay Feather Micro Features

The Micro is a well equipped affordable travel trailer. It comes with many standard features (depending on model) and several cool options as well. One item which I had hoped would be included was a double-axle. There are many advantages to having a camper with a double axel, including increased cargo carrying weight, and better handling on rough roads, such as the Winnebago Micro Minnie.

That’s not to say the single rubber-torsion Dexter axle used on the Micro is inferior. Dexter has been manufacturing trailer axles since 1960 so they know what they are doing. Here is a partial list of top features on the Jay Feather Micro:

  • Body width of 90-inches
  • Unloaded Vehicle Weight rating of fewer than 4,000 pounds
  • Solar prepped and pre-wire for an inverter
  • Standard 6-cubic feet fridge with an option to increase it to 8 cubic feet with 12V power
  • 3-burner cooktop with a glass cover
  • Microwave with the option to upgrade to a convection microwave
  • MORryde Step Above entry steps. Learn more about them here.

Jayco Jay Feather Micro Summary

When it comes to staying ahead of the competition Jayco is one of the better ones in the industry. The Jay Feather Micro series shows that Jayco is listening to the consumer and adding features like Azdel composite panels that buyers are demanding. Their ultralight camper the 12SRK is a very nice entry from Jayco’s intro to the segment and appeals to the younger crowd who may just want a small weekender for boondocking.

As of this post pricing on the Jay Feather Micro has not been published. You can check out the Micro series and all other Jayco models on their website.
